Math Nerds are Cool

at least, I think so.

Cocktails in San Antonio

I just got back on Sunday from the big annual math conference and it was hella tight. Through an online bulletin board, I found a roommate who’s about to get his Ph.D. from UC Riverside and turned out to be really cool. A good drinking buddy (see photo) and also with plenty of insight into graduate schools and stuff.

I think I accomplished all of my goals: have fun, get a better feel for current work going on in voting and decision theory, meet cute girls, find good spots in San Antonio, have fun.

It’s pretty neat that if you specialize a bit, “the field” narrows down to not that many people and even us little undergrads can connect with big weight. I feel like if I go to these things for a couple years I could end up knowing everybody. Also, everyone there was (1) smart, being a math nerd, and (2) relatively ambitious/social, being at a conference. Good combination; wish it could’ve lasted longer.
