Backpacking Oahu

I had promised to post more about my week and a half in Oahu… here goes.

This is the view I got one afternoon after doing some day hiking above Waikiki (which is the beach just east of Honolulu).

More pictures are up on my .Mac account. I even captioned them!

Basically, the trip was amazing. The first picture in that album is what greeted me when I got to the airport bag claim to wait for my parents. A crayon drawing by some second grader that reads, “Peace with Aloha is calm, so don’t worry about anything.” Kids are so smart. The last morning I was staying at a hostel in Waikiki and had a noon flight, so I decided to get up at 6am and hike Daimond Head (the big crater just east of the city) before I left. I got up to the top and asked another tourist to take a pic of me, and as he looked at the camera afterwards he mumbled “yeah the rainbow kind of came out.” I was like “Rainbow?!” and turned around to see this huge fat stream of colored light landing right over my shoulder on Honolulu. That picture sucked so I took another one myself, but anyway everything on the trip just seemed to work out really well… I never planned more than a day ahead but I didn’t have any problems – found places to stay easily, TheBus got me there for $2, and no one (thank god) stole my backpack or laptop. I was a little worried about being lonely spending 7 days around no one but strangers but people were real friendly and I ended up in long conversations like half the nights I was there… and also on TheBus.

Shout out to my boy Jordan “Big Money” Kunz who is spending a semester in Freiburg, Germany and apparently having tons of fun. Jordan’s blog is now up on this site, check over there for more stories of fun and revelry and lightly tasted beer.
